The layout was situated in the Stockyard restaurant area at Hellaby, but the control bunker/shelter is still in-situ and is situated just off Lidget Lane on the way to Bramley Tip.

Alfred Ernest Cakebread

Alfred was born in Wandsworth London in 1897 to William and Rose Cakebread. The family moved to Rotherham in 1910 and lived at Quarryfields Wickersley where William worked as a Plate Layer (above ground). 

In Dec 1915 Alfred enlisted in the 1/8th battalion Prince of Wales Own ( West Yorks) Regiment aged 18 his occupation was shown as Haulage Hand (Pit). The family were then living at 10 Wadsworth Road Bramley.

He landed in France on 27th Nov 1917 and joined his unit on 3rd Dec 1917.

On 7th Jan 1918 he was amongst a group recovering Stokes mortar bombs in Retaliation trench near Ypres. As they were carrying the crates of bombs there was an explosion and  7 of the group were wounded and 1 killed instantly. Alfred died of his wounds on 7th Jan 1918 and was buried at Menin Road South Military Cemetery.  He had served just 42 days.

He was awarded the British War medal and Victory medal which were sent to his parents at 177 Fairfield Terrace , Bawtry Road Bramley.
